In John 20:19-23, we read the story of Jesus appearing to his disciples after being raised from the dead. Surely, this moment of seeing their risen Savior alive again is a moment that would make anyone jumpy and surprised. So the very first thing Jesus says to his disciples is “Peace be with you!”

In the midst of a chaotic moment, Christ offers peace. And the disciples are overjoyed. With Christ’s return, they possess what they had always desired. Jesus breathes on them, just as when God breathed life into Adam.  It’s a new start, just like that was, complete with a charge: you too can forgive anyone’s sins, just as I can.

Forgiveness is the work that creates order in the midst of chaos.  Forgiveness is the work of restoration. God is bringing order to the world with you and through you, no matter who you are or where you came from. We each have a part to play as God restores creation from chaos to calm and God will use you, no matter what.

God, thank you, that you use each of us to restore creation and help bring shalom. Amen
